Sovereignty Day

Ever prayed as you approached your mailbox? …or answered a call? …or opened a letter?
I often do. I feel the need for the phone call to be good news. I want the letter to be encouraging (not just a bill or junk). Today, I wanted checks in the mailbox. It seems the clearer my need, the narrower my desires of God.
But today I was struck – as I often am – by the sovereignty of God. Instead of praying for checks in the mail (things are just a tad tight from our Philippines mission efforts), I decided God already had that covered. I chose (that hugely spiritual activity of deciding – the soulical deliberation of one’s will) to believe God has my interests – always in line with His glory – at heart.
Nope – today is “Mike’s Trusting Father’s Sovereignty Day”.
It’s the day (hopefully one of many!) when I am most interested in whatever is on God’s heart – what He would reveal to me. I know this isn’t some shockingly new Truth for those who read or listen to my rants regularly – I talk about the appropriation of grace and the anticipation of His revelation all the time.
But application of Truth is much rarer that articulation of Truth. So today, let me encourage you – when you feel the need for the mailbox, or telephone, or chance encounter, or doctor’s visit, or online bank check (or whatever it happens to be for you today) – God is intent on deepening His relationship with you. He wants you to know Him more, and to walk with Him more contentedly – as you grow in that Christ-confidence built upon the revelation of His more-than-sufficient grace.
Will He reveal Himself as the Giver of Good Gifts? Will He reveal Himself as Healer, or Provider, or Director, or Friend, or Something-You-Don’t-Even-Know-You-Need? I don’t know.
He will reveal Himself. You will find Him as you are seeking Him for whatever He might reveal – not just for the check in the mail. Oh yeah, and by the way… When you seek Him, and find Him, you’ll be really glad you did.
And just maybe you will enjoy a “Trusting Father’s Sovereignty Day” for yourself. It’s worth celebrating!
