Phantom Pain

They [the former tyrant masters] are dead, they shall not live and reappear; they are powerless ghosts, they shall not rise and come back. Therefore You have visited and made an end of them and caused every memory of them [every trace of their supremacy] to perish. (Isaiah 26:14 AMP)

A phantom limb is the sensation that an amputated limb is still attached to the body and is moving appropriately with other body parts. Phantom pain sensations are described as perceptions that an individual experiences relating to a limb that is not physically part of the body, as with an amputee. People who have lost an arm or a leg often perceive the limb as though it is still there, and they can literally feel excruciating pain in specific parts of the phantom limb.

When we are born again in Christ, we become a new creation. Old things have passed away, and all things become new (2 Corinthians 5:17). ALL things. No dark things of the past are left in us. We have been washed clean from all unrighteousness and sin (1 John 1:9, Isaiah 1:18). Clean. New. Righteous.

So why do we still struggle with old things that have supposedly passed away? How can those things can still hurt us, affect us, or influence us? If they’re gone, they’re gone…right? Pose those questions to the person who has had a limb amputated. Ask them about the phenomenon called “phantom pain”. Is their limb still there? No…obviously it is not. It is gone…”passed away.” How then could they feel pain in a foot or a hand that no longer exists? How could that pain cause their heart rate and blood pressure to rise? How could the pain of an object that’s not real cause real and tangible physical symptoms in their body?

The enemy is a liar. He is the master of deception…the king of illusion (2 Corinthians 11:14). He wants us to believe everything that is contrary to the Word of God. He backs up his convincing wiles with facts that are difficult for us to deny. Physical symptoms. Manifestations. Feelings. But one thing we have to understand is this…facts are one thing, Truth is another. Truth is always the reality above and beyond facts. Always. The fact is that the amputee is feeling pain, and that pain is manifesting physical symptoms in their body. The truth is that the source of their pain is not really there any longer…it is a deception…it is as gone as our “old man” is when we walk through that doorway of salvation. The Word of God is Truth…it is the only reality that is valid. The Truth will set us free; the Truth alone sanctifies us, not facts or that which we are experiencing outside of the Word (John 8:32, John 17:17).

Every situation in our lives, every struggle, every pain, every manifestation of the old man, every fact can be overcome by applying the Truth of God’s infallible Word. The Truth is that 2000 years ago, Jesus overcame all that is of darkness, sin, and death. And if we have accepted Him as our Lord and Savior, He is living IN us and all that He has overcome has NO place in us! We may feel the oppression of old things…we may feel fear and pain, we may be experiencing sickness and lack…but we need to pray for the eyes to see those things for the lies that they are and call them as such! They are deceptions to keep us grounded, to keep us believing we are still in bondage to the law of sin and death. The Truth is that we are free from those things (Romans 8:2). We have been promised a life more abundant than we could imagine, and we have an enemy who is fighting against us with everything that he has to keep us from experiencing that life (John 10:10).

Believing and declaring the Truth is crucial, but there’s more to it than our faith and words alone. We have to act as well. Faith must be followed up with action (James 2:26).

Imagine walking through a doorway into an open field. You are walking into the fresh air and the sun is shining. Suddenly, a dark cloud appears over your head and it starts to rain. You are getting wet. You can declare, “I am NOT getting wet” with every ounce of faith that you have, and the fact will remain that you are indeed wet. Now, if that faith is followed up by opening an umbrella over your head, you have just effectively combined your faith with action. The rain is a very obvious fact, but you can choose whether or not it touches you. When we get under the umbrella of God’s Word and stand against the dark shadows of our old man, that’s how we overcome. That’s how we begin to walk out our faith. That’s how we keep those things from touching us. We must believe the Truth, speak the Truth, but also walk in the Truth and not the facts (2 Cor 5:7). It’s all about choice.

Doing things even though we are experiencing fear. Thanking Him for abundance even though we are experiencing lack. Worshiping Him in the face of oppression. Standing and blessing the health of our bodies in the midst of sickness. Fear, lack, oppression, sickness…they are all shadows, phantoms, illusions that have the sole purpose of keeping us from the life and the destiny and the birthright that is rightfully ours in Jesus Christ. Whatever we focus on is what we empower. Focusing on the “phantoms” empowers them to produce the fruit of the old man in our lives. Real fruit that has been produced by an illusion. Just like the real blood pressure rise produced by the pain of a limb that doesn’t really exist anymore.

So what do we do with the phantoms? We reckon them dead. We choose to believe and have a confident, expectant assurance in the Truth of the Word that they are indeed dead. We ask the Father for a greater gift of faith, offering Him the faith that we do have. All things were accomplished by Jesus Christ on the cross once, for all, so the things of darkness no longer have any dominion over us! See Romans 6. May we know this glorious Truth that is the key to our freedom in Him! May we allow it to sink deep into our spirits. We have died with Him, therefore we live with Him, and the Truth is that we are totally and completely free from all of the phantoms that try to oppress us!

Lord, give us more light and revelation that we may implement your Word in our lives to overcome the wiles of the evil one. Help us to walk in a greater application of the power and simplicity of that Truth! Amen!
