Letter-writing prompts

A Gratitude Letter

A gratitude letter is a letter you write to one specific person to thank them for something they did. It goes beyond a quick thank-you note. You name what happened, how it felt at the time and what it has meant to you since.

Many people write one because a kindness has stayed with them for years and they never quite said so. It might be a teacher who took your work seriously, a neighbor who brought soup, or a friend who drove across town at midnight. Putting it on paper can help you notice how much that moment shaped you.

You can mail the letter, read it aloud to the person, or keep it in your journal. It never has to be sent. The writing is worth doing either way.

How to write it

  1. Choose one person and one thing they did that you still think about.
  2. Write down the moment as plainly as you can: where you were, what they said or did, and what was happening in your life then.
  3. Describe what it meant to you, both at the time and in the months or years after.
  4. Tell them how your life is different because of what they did, using small, real details.
  5. Close with a simple thank-you, then decide whether to send it, read it aloud to them or keep it for yourself.
