Scripture journaling

1 Peter 5:6-11

Many people come back to this passage when stress has piled up and prayer feels hard to start. Verse 7 says it plainly: "casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you." Writing those worries down, one by one, can be a simple way to hand them over in prayer. It can also help you see which worries are about today and which ones you have been carrying for a long time.

The passage does not pretend life is easy. It speaks of suffering, of the need to stay watchful, and of others "undergoing the same sufferings." It ends with a prayer that God will "perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you." These prompts invite you to sit with each part slowly, at your own pace, and to bring what you find to God in your own words.

6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time;

7 casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

8 Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

9 Withstand him steadfast in your faith, knowing that your brothers who are in the world are undergoing the same sufferings.

10 But may the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a little while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.

11 To him be the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.

Reflection prompts

  1. Verse 6 begins, "Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God." Where in your life right now are you trying to hold everything together on your own strength?

  2. Make a list of every worry on your mind today, big or small. Then read verse 7 and write a short prayer handing each one to God by name.

  3. Verse 7 says "he cares for you." Describe a moment, even a small one, when you felt cared for during a stressful time. What did it look like?

  4. Verse 8 asks you to "Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful." What helps you stay steady and clear-headed when stress rises, and what tends to pull you off balance?

  5. Verse 9 reminds you that others in the world are "undergoing the same sufferings." Who comes to mind when you read this? Write a prayer for them.

  6. In verse 10, the hard season lasts "a little while." Write about a past stretch of stress that did come to an end. What do you remember about getting through it?

  7. Choose one of the four words in verse 10: "perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle." Which one do you most long for right now, and why? Tell God about it in a few honest sentences.

  8. Verse 11 closes with praise: "To him be the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen." End your journaling time by writing your own short prayer of praise, even if it is only a line or two.
