Galatians 5:22-26
The Fruit of the Spirit
Many people come back to this passage because it is so plain. It names nine qualities, from love to self-control, and lists them as the fruit of the Spirit. Fruit grows slowly. You cannot force it in an afternoon. That makes these verses a gentle place to write when you feel far from the person you hope to be, or when you want to notice small signs of growth you might otherwise miss.
The passage also turns outward. It asks us to "walk by the Spirit" and warns against "provoking one another, and envying one another." When you journal with it, you can look honestly at your ordinary days: the line at the store, the tense dinner table, the friend whose good news stung a little. Then you can bring all of it to God in prayer, one word at a time.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith,
23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
24 Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and lusts.
25 If we live by the Spirit, let’s also walk by the Spirit.
26 Let’s not become conceited, provoking one another, and envying one another.
Reflection prompts
-
Read the list in verses 22 and 23 slowly. Which of these nine words feels closest to you right now, and which feels farthest away? Write a few lines about each.
-
Verse 22 calls these qualities "the fruit of the Spirit," something that grows rather than something you build alone. Where in your life are you trying to force growth? Write a short prayer asking for patience with the slow parts.
-
Think of one moment this past week when you saw kindness, goodness or gentleness in someone else. What did it look like, and what did it teach you?
-
Verse 23 says, "Against such things there is no law." What would it feel like to practice love or peace freely, without keeping score of whether you are doing it well enough?
-
Verse 25 says, "If we live by the Spirit, let’s also walk by the Spirit." Picture tomorrow from morning to night. Where is one ordinary place, like a commute, a meeting or a meal, where you could take a single step in that direction?
-
Choose one quality from the list that you need today, perhaps joy or self-control. Write a letter to God describing honestly where you are with it, and what you are hoping for.
-
Verse 26 names being conceited, provoking one another and envying one another. Is there a person you find yourself comparing yourself to? Write about that feeling gently, then write a prayer for that person by name or in your own words.
