Scripture journaling
James 1:2-8
Many people turn to James 1:2-8 when life feels heavy and their faith feels thin. The passage doesn't pretend hard times are easy. It asks you to look at them differently, as a place where endurance can grow. Then it offers a plain invitation: if you lack wisdom, you can ask God, "who gives to all liberally and without reproach."
The same verses speak honestly about doubt, picturing it as "a wave of the sea, driven by the wind and tossed." If that image feels close to home, you are not alone. Journaling with this passage gives you room to name what is testing you and what you need to know. You can also be truthful about the back-and-forth in your heart, and bring all of it to God on the page, one line at a time.
2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you fall into various temptations,
3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.
4 Let endurance have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.
6 But let him ask in faith, without any doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven by the wind and tossed.
7 For that man shouldn’t think that he will receive anything from the Lord.
8 He is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
Reflection prompts
-
Verse 2 says, "Count it all joy." Write about a hard thing in your life right now. What would it look like to hold it a little differently today, even if joy feels far away?
-
Verse 3 says "the testing of your faith produces endurance." Think back to a past season that tested you. What did you learn to carry then that you still carry now?
-
Verse 4 asks you to "Let endurance have its perfect work." Where are you tempted to rush through something slow or uncomfortable? Write a short prayer asking for patience with it.
-
Verse 5 begins, "But if any of you lacks wisdom." Name one decision or question where you honestly don't know what to do. Write it to God as plainly as you can.
-
God is described in verse 5 as one "who gives to all liberally and without reproach." Do you ever hold back from asking because you expect to be scolded? Write about what it would feel like to ask freely.
-
Verse 6 describes doubt as "a wave of the sea, driven by the wind and tossed." Write about a time your thoughts or feelings moved back and forth like that. What winds were pushing you?
-
Verse 8 uses the word "double-minded." Where do you feel pulled in two directions right now? Write both sides down honestly, then bring them to God in prayer.
-
Read verses 5 and 6 together. Write a prayer for wisdom that also tells God the truth about any doubt you carry, and ask for a steadier heart as you wait.
