Matthew 11:28-30

Many people return to Matthew 11:28-30 when they feel worn thin. The words begin with an invitation, "Come to me," and they are spoken to "all you who labor and are heavily burdened." Nobody is left out, and nothing has to be fixed first. Writing slowly with these three verses can help you name what you are carrying and bring it honestly into prayer.

The passage holds a promise of rest, but it also speaks of a yoke, a burden and learning from someone who is "gentle and humble in heart." You don't need to finish every prompt below. Pick the one that meets you where you are today, and give it a few quiet minutes with your pen.

28 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.

30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Reflection prompts

  1. Verse 28 speaks to "all you who labor and are heavily burdened." Make a list of what you are carrying this week, the small things alongside the large ones. Which one feels heaviest right now?

  2. "Come to me" is an invitation, not a demand. What tends to keep you from coming, and what would it look like to come just as you are today? Write your answer as a prayer if that feels right.

  3. Verse 28 ends with "I will give you rest." Describe a time you felt truly rested, in body or in spirit. What was different about that day or that moment?

  4. Verse 29 says, "Take my yoke upon you." Rest here still includes carrying something. What responsibility are you trying to hold all on your own, and what would it mean to share it?

  5. Read "learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart" slowly. Where in your life could you use more gentleness, toward the people around you or toward yourself?

  6. Verse 29 promises that "you will find rest for your souls." Rest for your body and rest for your soul are not always the same thing. What does your soul need most this week? Write a few honest lines to God about it.

  7. Verse 30 says, "my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." Are you carrying a weight that may never have been yours to hold? Write about what it might feel like to set one piece of it down.

  8. Read all three verses once more and choose one word or phrase that stays with you. Write it at the top of the page, then spend a few minutes praying with it and noting anything that comes to mind.
