Psalm 34:1-18
Psalm 34
Many people turn to Psalm 34 when they are grieving because it holds two things side by side. It opens with "I will bless Yahweh at all times," and it closes with "Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart." Praise and heartbreak share the same psalm. Neither one cancels the other.
You do not have to feel grateful or strong to journal with this passage. You can come with a cry, a question or just a tired heart. The psalm gives you words for crying out, for looking for small signs of goodness and for telling God the truth about your sorrow. Take the prompts slowly. Use one a day, or stay with a single verse for as long as you need.
1 I will bless Yahweh at all times. His praise will always be in my mouth.
2 My soul shall boast in Yahweh. The humble shall hear of it, and be glad.
3 Oh magnify Yahweh with me. Let us exalt his name together.
4 I sought Yahweh, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.
5 They looked to him, and were radiant. Their faces shall never be covered with shame.
6 This poor man cried, and Yahweh heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.
7 Yahweh’s angel encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.
8 Oh taste and see that Yahweh is good. Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.
9 Oh fear Yahweh, you his saints, for there is no lack with those who fear him.
10 The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger, but those who seek Yahweh shall not lack any good thing.
11 Come, you children, listen to me. I will teach you the fear of Yahweh.
12 Who is someone who desires life, and loves many days, that he may see good?
13 Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking lies.
14 Depart from evil, and do good. seek peace, and pursue it.
15 Yahweh’s eyes are toward the righteous. His ears listen to their cry.
16 Yahweh’s face is against those who do evil, to cut off their memory from the earth.
17 The righteous cry, and Yahweh hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles.
18 Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.
Reflection prompts
-
Verse 1 says, "I will bless Yahweh at all times." In grief, praise can feel far away or even impossible. Write honestly about where praise sits for you right now. Is there one small thing, however quiet, you can still thank God for today?
-
Verse 18 says, "Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart." Describe your broken heart in plain words: what you lost, what you miss and what the days feel like now. Then write a short prayer telling God what you long for nearness to look like.
-
In verse 6, "This poor man cried, and Yahweh heard him." Write your own cry to God. Leave it untidy if you need to. What have you been carrying that you have not yet said out loud?
-
Verse 4 speaks of being delivered "from all my fears." Grief often brings new fears with it. List the fears you are holding right now, and beside each one write a single sentence of prayer.
-
Verse 3 says, "Let us exalt his name together." The psalm invites company. Who has sat with you in this loss, even in a small way? If you feel alone, write about the kind of company you are longing for and ask God for it.
-
Verse 8 says, "Oh taste and see that Yahweh is good." Grief can dull the senses. Look back over the past week for one ordinary moment of goodness: a meal someone brought, light through a window, a kind text. If you cannot find one yet, write that down too. It is an honest prayer.
-
Verse 14 says, "seek peace, and pursue it." Seeking peace in grief does not mean getting over your loss. What might gentle peace look like for you this week? Name one small, kind step you could take toward rest.
